Walter J. Mahoney, III

Walter Mahoney, beloved brother, uncle, godfather, cousin and friend, passed away at home on July 15, 2025.

Born on June 29, 1972, Walter was the cherished son of the late Walter and Patricia (O’Brien) Mahoney. He grew up in the Frankford section of Philadelphia near Simpson playground, where he met some of his childhood and lifelong friends. He was a proud graduate of Cardinal Dougherty Catholic High School, Class of 1990.

Walter spent many years as a bank teller before obtaining his bachelor’s degree from the University of Phoenix, and then he worked as a social worker, where he aided those with disabilities. His greatest joy was when his niece/goddaughter Claire was born. He cherished his role as a father figure, with many memories together, including fun times in the pool and being her “Dance Dad.”

Walter is survived by his siblings Kevin Mahoney (Ann), Kerry Mahoney, Patricia Mahoney O’Reilly (Michael), Vincent Razler (Kathleen), and Joan Mahoney. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and was predeceased by his brother, John Razler.

Walter was the “give you his last dollar” type. No matter how bad his situation was or his health, he always kept a positive attitude and never missed an opportunity to call or message his family and friends for every birthday, holiday, or special occasion. A true sports aficionado, Walt was ecstatic to see his beloved teams, such as the Eagles, win. Equally, he was a steadfast, loyal fan who stood behind his teams through high and low periods

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation and funeral on Friday, August 1st, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at McCafferty Funeral & Cremation Inc., 6711 Frankford Ave. There will be a service at 11:00 am where memories and stories will be shared. Further arrangements will be held in private by his family.

Walt was literally one of the single nicest people I've ever met. When I first moved to Philly he was always there with a hug and smile to make me feel like I was part of whatever it was that was going on. The world lost a beautiful soul and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his friends and family today and always ❤️
