Barry Ira Unger

Barry Ira Unger, 82, passed away quietly on July 1, 2026 in Chalfont, Pennsylvania. He was born in Brooklyn on October 21, 1943 to the late Nathan and Sylvia Unger, and is survived by his two sisters Diane and Carol.

Barry served the United States of America during the Vietnam War, spending much of his time in Japan where he discovered a love of Japanese artwork. After the war, he returned home to New York to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and became a professor of psychology at Pace University. He discovered a love of biking and nature, and took frequent hikes in Valley Forge National Park. Barry loved animals, especially his Golden Retriever Lucy and his Maine Coon Sassy, who miss him dearly.

He was known as kind and generous among his loved ones, donating to animal welfare organizations and supporting cancer research. Many remember him as hilarious, with a dry sense of humor that came out of nowhere. He passed on his love of reading, history, and Lord of the Rings.

Barry is survived by his life companion Margaret Unger and his sons Shane Unger (Nina) and Kaden Unger (Theo).

He did not wish for a funeral, but rather for his ashes to be spread in nature. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ASPCA in his name.

I worked with Barry when he had contractor assignments at QVC. He became one of my best friends. We shared many lunches, bicycle rides on the Schuylkill Trail and breakfasts afterwards and walks in Valley Forge Park. He will be missed .

Barry was my cubemate at QAD. We were as close as 2 peas in a pod. We talked daily and a day didn’t go by without a good laugh. I can still see him rolling his eyes when Caron got loud on the other side of the wall. His dry sense of humor and quick comebacks were a treat. So many stories I could tell. I miss you buddy. RIP Barry
