Joan Reed

Joan (Bainbridge) Reed, 87, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on August 20, 2025.

Born to Joseph and Lovania Bainbridge in Barnesville, PA, Joan lived a life rooted in resilience, love, and simple joys. As a child, she could often be found riding along in the coal truck with her Pop or playing baseball with her brother Joe and his friends. Though she dressed mostly as a tomboy, she embraced her playful side—donning miniskirts in her youth and roller skating with flair, fondly recalling how she used to “jitterbug on roller skates.”

Joan spent most of her working years as a waitress, where her warmth, wit, and no-nonsense charm left lasting impressions on countless patrons and coworkers. She was deeply patriotic and found joy in the everyday—watching Westerns, cheering on the Philadelphia A’s and Phillies , and reveling in films that celebrated America’s spirit.

She cherished time with her children, always encouraging them to do their best and cheering them on from the sidelines with unwavering support. She never missed a chance to gather for Fourth of July fireworks, sing along to old-school country music, or take spontaneous trips to revisit the places of her youth.

Joan is survived by her children: Karen Trush, Gregory Trush, and Jennifer Pinnelli (Steven), who carry forward her legacy of kindness and humor. She is also survived by her grandchildren Adam and Greg, granddaughter Brighid, and great-granddaughters Emma and Everly. Her love extended to many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Kate Stargell (Stephen) and granddaughter Samantha Vargas—both of whom she missed dearly and held close in her heart.

Joan’s life was a testament to the beauty of everyday moments and the strength of family bonds. Her memory will live on in the laughter around a dinner table, the crackle of fireworks in the summer sky, and the twang of a country song drifting through the air.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joan’s life on Friday September 5, 2025 at McCafferty Funeral Home 6709 Frankford Avenue Philadelphia PA 19135 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be held at George Washington Memorial Park 80 Stenton Ave, Plymouth Meeting

We would set the band up in Sheppard s parking lot on Sunday to play music and all the neighbors would bring out their chairs and cocktails 🍸 and someone called the police even though we had permission from Richard the guy who owned the beer store to play on Sunday's they were closed and the police said it was an unlawful gathering. Out of nowhere Joan came out the side door stuck the flag in the ground next to her house and said it's not unlawful know the police just said have a nice day. Leave it to Joan mrs trush to know once the flag was raised it's no longer an unlawful assembly!!!!She was one of a kind !miss you lady God bless

My mama may not have been the best but she was the best for me. She always put her children first and sacrificed a lot for us. I will miss everything about her. Hearing the same stories for the millionth time, Answering the same question over and over, dinners at Friendly's, Phone calls just to say hi and see what I'm doing, Christmases, calling her after midnight to wish her a Happy New Year, and so so much more. So thankful she was my Mama ❤️

I’m so sorry for your loss. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. My favorite memory of your mom was her driving up to her parking spot and grabbing that cone from the car window. Always made me laugh. RIP Joan ❤️

Joan I will miss your Christmas cards every year and the little notes you always put inside. The world is a little dimmer without you. May you rest in peace.
