Daniel Joseph Keating, was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 2, 1946 to Richard Johnston Keating and Mary Preston. He passed away on October 7, 2023 in Tallahassee, FL at 77 years of age. Dan grew up in Philadelphia and after graduating from La Salle College High School, he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree at Drexel University in 1969. While in college, Dan would go with his long-time friend to social events at the Polish Intercollegiate Club. This is where he met the love of his life, Carol, in 1968. Dan and Carol started double dating and were inseparable from the day they met, and they married on February 7, 1970. Dan and Carol had three wonderful children: Lisa, Dan and Jessica, and were later blessed with two grandsons, Jason and Adam. Family was the most important thing to Dan and Carol and each played an important role: Dan worked in the insurance industry outside of the home and Carol ran the household and cared for the children. They were both loving and doting parents who planned wonderful road trips, exploring the country with their kids. Dan was sure to be there to cheer on his kids playing their favorite sports while they were growing up. He loved his family dearly and was right by her side when wife Carol passed away in 2009. When it came to his professional career, Dan was quite accomplished! After becoming an actuary he was accepted into the American Academy of Actuaries in 1979; achieved the status of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1981 and Fellow of the Life Management Institute in 1986. In the private sector, Dan worked for Monumental Life Insurance and Protective Life Insurance. He always enjoyed his work writing and reviewing policies, but he found his true love in advocating for consumers by working first for the State of Oklahoma and thereafter in Florida. Dan joined the Office of Insurance Regulation for the State of Florida, with the Life and Health Product Review Unit in 2003 and became the Chief Actuary in 2006. Dan believed his role as an Insurance Regulator was extremely important to the consumers he served. Making certain that people were treated fairly was his number one goal. Knowing what a huge loss it was for Dan to retire, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation hosted a wonderful retirement ceremony on November 16, 2009 and all of Dan’s children traveled to be there. Those who worked closest to him said that although Dan was quiet, once you got to know him you would find that he had “a heart as big as the Grand Canyon and a voice that can make a room go silent when it rises. He had a caregiving spirit and a passion for the finer things in life.” Dan enjoyed traveling with Carol to the annual Insurance Conferences to see the sights and spend time together without the children under foot. He enjoyed listening to many genres of music, gardening rose bushes, playing golf, eating seafood, photography, reading, and watching his favorite teams play basketball. Go Villanova! Although there were many pets for the children throughout the years, there is no doubt that “Puddy Tat” belonged to Dan and he loved her fiercely. Dan is survived by son Daniel (Lucy) of Maryland; Jessica (Chris) of Delaware; and Lisa (Chris), along with grandchildren Jason and Adam in Pennsylvania; and his beloved “Puddy Tat”. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, and his beautiful wife Carol Keating (9/1/09). He will be laid to rest on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 10:30 a.m., at the St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Springfield, PA. Please arrive at the grave by 10:15am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dan’s honor at either ECAH Animals, Inc. PO Box 10250, Tallahassee, FL 32301 (or) Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research PO Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741. Dan was an irreplaceable Patriarch of the family. He is deeply loved and already missed by his family and friends.
