Michael Raymond Purcell

December 30, 1948 – March 7, 2026

Michael Raymond Purcell passed away on March 7, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 77.

Born on December 30, 1948, Michael grew up in Niles, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Architecture and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from American University, reflecting both his creativity and his lifelong love of learning.

Michael spent many years living in Washington, D.C., before moving to Philadelphia six years ago to be closer to family. After relocating, he volunteered as a mentor with SCORE, where he advised entrepreneurs and small business owners as they worked to start and grow their businesses.

Michael was warm, charismatic, and naturally curious about the world around him. He loved writing, music, and good conversation, and he never missed an opportunity to deliver one of his signature zinger jokes. Whether talking with friends or striking up a conversation with someone new, he had a way of making people feel at ease and sharing a laugh. He also loved spending time at the beach, one of his favorite places to relax.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Pontius, who passed away in 2019.

He is survived by his daughters, Wesley Purcell and Glynnis Purcell, his stepson Colby Cooper, and his grandson Phoenix Cooper.

Michael will be remembered for his humor, curiosity, and the warmth he brought to the people around him.
