The first time I met my Jacquie, Kelly and I ran into her outside of Acme. She was in her Bronco with her boyfriend at the time. She must have had a feeling about me because it wasn’t long till I ran into her in the same Acme parking lot, in the same Bronco truck, when she said to me, “When you are ready, I have my grandmother’s ring for you”. I am not sure if she knew just how much family meant to me at that point, but her offering me a family heirloom to give as an engagement ring meant the world to me. After Kelly and I bought our house and got married, my new mother-in-law stayed with us for a weekend and never left. It wasn’t such a bad thing because she became our live-in babysitter. Most places Kelly and I went, we took Brianna with us, but now and then, we needed time alone, and Jacquie was always at home to watch Brianna. When Savanna was born, Jaquie stepped up, making our lives easier and taking care of her when we couldn’t. Brianna moved into the basement bedroom, sharing the room with Jaquie. While Kelly and I worked, and Brianna was at school, Jacquie raised Savanna. I can remember her feeding her, changing her, bouncing her around, letting her play on the deck out back while she had a smoke. After the passing of her son, Ryan, it was a difficult time for all of us. She never could let go of that pain. It was hard to watch her go through and live with that. When she decided to move out and live with a friend of hers, it was hard. We didn’t see her as much as we were used to. When she told us she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, we were devastated. We made sure to enjoy the last month we had with her. Although she was upset, she was ready to be with her son after waiting 17 years. Although we miss her, we are glad that she is no longer suffering. I will miss her walking around with her Capri Sun, trying to regulate her blood sugar, sitting at the computer, and thinking out loud as she navigated Facebook. Seriously, EVERY thought was out loud. Whenever I would visit her in her final month, I knew how hard it was for her. I tried my best to make her laugh as much as I could. Sometimes it would work. She would laugh while Kelly would give me her famous “I want a divorce” look. Other times, when I would try to get her with a dad joke, Jaquie just gave me that look that told me it was a stupid joke and not worthy of her laugh. When she did laugh, though, it was a great laugh. One that I will miss dearly. I thank you all for coming together to support our family in our time of need. I thank you for sharing your fond memories about Jacquie. I like hearing the stories about her from before I met her. They always crack me up. Jacquie knew how much music was a part of my family. She would come out with us to see my uncle play in The Road Dogs and had a great time with us. We often talked about music. She was always playing Bon Jovi in the house. I swear, if she ever met him, we would have never seen her again. She LOVED that man! It meant the world to her when Brianna bought her tickets for the two of them to go see Bon Jovi. She impressed me one time when she told me the story of the time she met John Lennon. Yes, she met JOHN LENNON. However, she quickly shot the enthusiasm out of me when she would wrinkle her nose. Saying how much she didn’t like him and thought he was rude. I will end on the one story that I will never forget. We were at a family function, sitting around talking with my Dad. Jaquie mentioned that she once worked security at Peaches record store at Welsh & The Boulevard. My dad told her he used to go there all the time. He then told her that he saw The A’s play a concert there. Funny enough, she worked that same concert. I never got over how their paths crossed so many years ago and then again when Kelly and I met. Jacquie, I thank you for all you did for Kelly and me, and especially our girls. I know you will be watching over them as their guardian angel, but I promise to take care of all your girls the best I can. I love you, I will miss you, but I am so relieved that your suffering is over. Go, rest in peace, and catch up with Ryan. Tell him Cupcake says hi!
