David L. English

David L. English, a resident of Watermark in Philadelphia, died March 3 , 2021, in Philadelphia. He was born in Bethlehem, PA on May 6, 1926 to Lester S. and Gretchen H. English. He was predeceased by his wife Mariann, brother William, sister Doris Smullin and son John.

English graduated from Villanova University with the first class of the Holloway Program for naval officers. He served in combat in Korea on USS Gurke and LST 975 and resigned with the rank of Lt. jg. He began his career in purchasing at Bethlehem Steel. In 1975 he earned the designation of Certified Purchasing Manager, and he was a Life Member in the National Association of Purchasing Management. He held positions with International Utilities, Mayer Pollock, Sharon Steel, Republic Steel, and LTV Steel Company, Cleveland, from which he retired in 1991.

His lifelong interests were classical and big band music, and he enjoyed playing trumpet, singing and acting. The band he led, The Society Six, performed in the early 1950s. Woodworking was a hobby and he built four wooden sailboats. He also held an FAA private pilot’s certificate. In the mid-1960s he was elected to the school board of the Bethlehem Area School District.

English is survived by daughters Carleton Sheppard and Mary-Chilton van Hees; and sons David and Stanley. He leaves 3 granddaughters and one great-grandson. His three stepchildren are Zoann Spencer Callahan, Suzan Spencer, and Steven Spencer.
