Catherine Salapata

August 30th, 2021

On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, Catherine Salapata, loving sister and friend to many, passed away at the Age of 57. Catherine was born in Philadelphia on May 19, 1964 to proud Ukrainian-American parents Stefan and Anna Salapata. She was an energetic Philly girl challenging limitations to women early on in her life by becoming a unionized carpenter at a time when few had the determination to make it in a male dominated profession. For more than twenty years she lived in the 700 Block of N 3rd Street in Northern Liberties and was active in the Ukrainian American Citizens’ Association on Franklin Street. Economic pressure initiated by the developments in her neighborhood made it necessary some years ago to move to Clementon in New Jersey. Cathy kept connected to her old neighborhood by working for many years for the German Society of Pennsylvania on Spring Garden Street – first as a construction worker and in building maintenance and for the past 5 years as a part time Event Manager. This position was a perfect fit for someone with her skill set. She was a resolute but friendly, reliable and hardworking employee, as well as a kind and generous person and a friend to many in the Northern Liberties neighborhood. She is survived by her sister Mary and her brothers Joseph and Steve and their families. Family and friends are invited to attend  her viewing on Wednesday, September 1st, 2021, from 9:00am – 10:00am, at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, (830 N Franklin St.) There will be a service at 10:00AM in the church. Burial to follow at the Historic Beechwood Cemetery in Bensalem, PA. A Memorial Service for family, friends, colleagues and neighbors is taking place on September 2, 2021 at the German Society of Pennsylvania, 611 Spring Garden Street at 10am. Please RSVP to this gathering by emailing info@germansociety.org or by calling 215-627-2332.
